Brockley Key

Once a much loved local feature, Artmongers produced this piece in 2006, as part of the Brockley Max Festival. Our favourite reaction? A child exclaiming ‘Dad! There’s a robot inside the house!’

We loved thinking about what might happen if you wound it up, the possibilities seemed endless. In fact, we loved The Key so much we also featured it on stickers and garments.

In 2017, we restored The Key. The most interesting thing about revisiting an artwork after so long is being able to freshen it up with a few new tricks we’ve learned along the way, like pushing the colour strengths or adding running with a theatrical upward shadow.

Sadly, The Key is no longer there. The landlord of the building decided they didn’t want it. If you have a public facing wall and would like to bring The Key back to life please give us a shout!

We actually finished The Key a week before it was due to be erected during the Brockley Street Art Festival. We made the most of it, taking to the streets of Central London to improvise a short Chaplinesque film.
