(By the Way)

(By the Way) is situated between New Cross Road and Lewisham Way in New Cross. This junction has a high level of road rage incidents; it can be dangerous and noisy at peak hours and it is also highly polluted.

Like on any busy road, people lose their tempers and can become ruthless, so we took the chance to interrupt with a still landscape.

How do you subtract from an already busy space by adding something new?

We wanted to help with a dose of visual breathing space, created by the curves of the design countering the perspective of the old building – like a plough opening spatial lines in front of you.

The rich colour palette adds a sense of complexity to an otherwise simple idea. The landscape is empty and still – an effective antidote to the pressured passer-by.
