Deptford Arena

Artmongers have been active in this space on New Cross Road since 2008 with ‘The Deptford Marbles’, which saw three iterations, before becoming ‘The Deptford Arena’ in 2016.

The corner, previously plagued with anti-social behaviour, was transformed back in 2008 with ‘The Deptford Marbles’. As well as the mural, Artmongers challenged Trinity Laban Choreography Students to come up with site-specific works for an event they put together. There was even tea and cake!

With funding from Lewisham Council, ‘The Deptford Arena,’ was painted in 2016 as part of the Deptford X Festival. Taking inspiration from the corner’s reputation for unruly behaviour, the amphitheatre reminds us of how long beastly behaviours have existed for. The foreground looks back at us, while the maze, the city and horizon draw our eyes into space. While the team were painting a passerby commented, “It goes against everything I believe in, but I love it!”
