Cowbins

At first, we painted our own wheelie bins for fun. Then the neighbours asked us to do theirs…

Eventually, we ended up painting Lewisham Council’s recycling bins. The license was then sold to bin manufacturers Egbert Taylor Company, who in turn sold it to Hackney Council and a few other local authorities in the UK. Suddenly, our bins were everywhere.

The Cowbins came from our desire to create an icon for recycling that people would form an emotional connection to. The visual association comes from the fact cows are natural recyclers, as they have four stomachs and are therefore able to extract more energy from the grass than other animals.

The ´Bling Bin´ was another less know classic, inspired in a child´s idea during one of our workshops, who stuck lots of pictures of luxury items from posh magazines onto a rubbish truck!
