Hands Up!

In 2005, we made our first participatory artwork, which involved over five hundred people sharing their lives through their own hands.

A participatory artwork made in the New Cross and Hatcham area. Five hundred people lent a hand to create this vibrant photographic artwork, which extended over one hundred and fifty meters. To create the images, we called round different groups and organisations in the area, and even ran pop-up stalls, stopping random people in the street. We used a technique that’s normally used to photograph products and food, but instead focused on spontaneous takes of peoples’ hands - talk about improvisation.

An early Artmongers participatory artwork created for a building site fence in New Cross, South East London. There had been lots of street violence occurrences due to the sense that the space belonged to no one at the time of the works being carried out. So our idea was to involve a large number of local people showing care for the space with their hands . The reduction in crime was recorded at the time. Made in 2006 with support from NDC (New Deals for Communities)
