Rafita

We first met Rafita, the Yawning Donkey when we struck up conversation with his owner. He said that what he respects Rafita because he doesn’t always obey the rules. Sure, this can be frustrating, but a life spent obeying the rules doesn’t guarantee success either. In fact, sometimes revolting or rejecting these rules can be the wisest course of action.

Today, the Yawning Donkey sits on a rural house in Alboraia, Valencia, surrounded by a newly expanded motorway and a busy road that leads to the beach.

Rafita was a willing model, and we managed to capture in a moment of total unselfconsciousness, losing all control over his image as he lets out an enormous yawn. Perhaps he is reminding the motorists that a creature of his size could swallow them whole. Perhaps he is just bored of watching them. You’ll have to visit and ask him yourself
