Hands up! – Participatory work in New Cross

hands hoarding

A participatory artwork made in New Cross, South East London by Artmongers. Five hundred people lent a hand to create a vibrant artwork. A regular passer-by driver said ‘we were hoping for traffic to get to see it’

We got the request from New Cross Gate NDC (a government organisation trying to improve the area) to come up with an idea for turning a hoarding of a construction site from wild, violent and mean into a beautiful place.

We came up with the idea of photographing peoples’ hands in theatrical positions to humanise the space and introduce a playing ingredient.
