New Horizon - Journal

Between 2014 and 2015 Artmongers collaborated with Dulwich Picture Gallery to create participatory artworks for the Snowsfield Adolescent Unit for young people with mental disorders at the Maudsley Hospital.

New Horizon was designed in collaboration with young people staying at the facility, staff and the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

“While working with the young people we developed the idea of journeys – the excitement, the hopes and fears. During those moments our own journeys converged and we could share ideas.” explained Patricio. “In painting there is a long standing tradition of landscapes that take you on a journey without you ever having to move. Even though the young people have to stay here during their treatment, they can travel with their eyes and in their mind.”

The last in the series of works are the window (s)trips. The idea is to give young people who look out of the windows new scenes to take in, rather than the traditional drab landscape. The prints feature carefully cropped details from Dulwich Picture Gallery’s pictures, reframed for their new home.

We also made an artwork for the stairs used by patients to go from their rooms to their school class. For it we created a panel decorated with bubbles which reflected and distorted the space of the stairs.
