Newcomen Centre

In 2012, Artmongers won a public commission to make a series of site-specific artworks, to address children on the Autism Spectrum who come to be diagnosed at the Newcomen Centre of Neuroscience at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Our proposed theme was the wind and how it affects our lives.

Developing a creative environment for children with conditions like autism and aspergers presented us with a fascinating challenge. A combination of research, observation and excellent input from the therapists and clinical staff who work with the children helped guide the creative process. The project was completed in close cooperation with architects Stevensen Associates.

The outcome is a calm, light filled space with the unifying theme of wind. From the magnetic weather map for younger children, to the more scientific anemometer display, the theme is presented through 15 different artworks to support the patients during their visit.

‘Bag and String’ was one of the films we created for the reception area of the clinic. Because of its location, the film had to be silent. However, we’ve added music for a special online version, which you can watch below.

Other fun artworks were a hot air balloon race overlooking The Houses of Parliament and a life-size Queen Elizabeth II for children to Measure their Highness with.
