Something New Waterloo

Local stakeholders and community groups have voiced support for the creation of a participatory murals on Sandell Street intended to re-energise this neglected urban space beneath Waterloo East Station. The aim is to give voice to groups that are traditionally marginalised from having a positive impact on the streetscape, like young men and women.

We connected with local residents association, LERA and SoWN (South Bank and Waterloo Neighbours) which was met with predominantly positive response. We are also talking to We Are Waterloo who is onboard with the idea of a process where residents are given a choice to vote on.

We worked with young men from both the local secondary school, London Nautical and young women from Coin Street Community Builders to give them agency over what kind of elemants they wanted to bring into the creative process. Together we develop three designs which are distinct and which we would be happy to paint any of them.

We expect this project to be one where all the necessary parts show up gradually and organically. First the permission from the owner of the wall space itself (tick), then the participants input on the designs (tick). We are now building a crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds to produce it. We will be painting the winning design around April 2024.
