Windows of our heart

Created alongside their diverse group of members to celebrate BTC´s 50th anniversary, this work intends to honour the contributions of the windrush generation as well as benefit the wider Brockley community.

The Windrush Generation have been an integral part of so many of our flourishing communities, including the growth of the Brockley Tenants Coop. As part of their anniversary celebrations, Artmongers were commissioned to create a participatory mural that shone a light on the creativity within their diverse community of tenants.

The mural needed to work both for the BTC members as well as fit the wider local context. Many wonderful, varied ideas were put forward and Artmongers carefully distilled them into three main sketches. The members then took a vote to decide which design would be implemented.

Windows to Our Heart speaks of the complexities and beauty of urban living. An abstract collection of windows flow together in an interconnected, luminous fashion. The night time feel of the colours intentionally invokes a feeling of warmth shining from the windows, hinting at the varied internal lives of each unique home.

Through vivid colours, patterns and wavy rhythms, the mural celebrates the Caribbean spirit of adventure, as well as the many other backgrounds of the people who make up the Coop today. This mural celebrates people coming together to make positive change more specifically, uplifting this pro-active community that works to provide people safe and affordables homes to live in.
