A Bug’s Eye View

In Spring of 2024 the Forest Hill Society began sowing seeds for a new mural to brighten up a big empty wall at Forest Hill Station, a buzzing transportation link and local hub.

With the help of an NCIL grant from Lewisham council, the idea began to slowly germinate into reality…

Throughout Spring and Summer, Artmongers and the Forest Hill Society worked together to engage a diverse range of local residents, businesses, artists and visitors to uncover potential themes and ideas to explore for the mural design. During this investigation process, we heard many interesting and contrasting opinions for what kind of story this wall should tell.

Through collaborative workshopping, we developed three distinct designs options.

Through a combination of in-person voting boards and an online platform, we heard feedback on our designs from over 1000 residents and members of Forest Hill and Honour Oak!

It was clear that a mural was a siginifcant

‘A Bug’s Eye View’ was a clear winner with 57% of the overall vote.

‘The Way Back Home’ was a strong runner up with 30%

Only 6.9% voted towards no mural at all.

Painting got underway in September 2024, helped by a team of local volunteers and graduates of London School of Muralism.

The final mural speaks to the intricate and sometimes eccentric inner worlds that exist within the ordinary.

A train station can be both a passing place, and a hive of activity, depending on how you choose to look at it.

This mural reminds us to occasionally stop, look up, and appreciate our surroundings.

Although small in size, A Bug’s Eye View can sometimes be the most expansive.
