Sky School
In 2018 we travelled to The Gambia for a week, planning to paint an artwork with a nursery school just outside of Banjul. We ended up not only painting the whole school, but also finding a concept and a new name for it – the Sky School.
The idea emerged after we took down some old posters from the classrooms and painted everything with a base colour. Our original plan was to put the posters back up again once we’d finished painting, but the blue base colour inspired us. What if…
We started to think about how creative ways to frame the content the children learn, and quickly came up with the idea of using clouds.
Towards the middle of the week we came up with a new name – Sky School – and towards the end of it, decided to frame the content of the second, more senior class with planets. One class would be called ‘pilots’ and the other ‘astronauts’.
Catherine also ran a Hope Circle – a guided conversation for women, meant to give them space to listen to each other and open up their hearts. She trained a local woman to carry out more of these conversations in the future.
Working at the school was made fun by the children, who were so friendly and keen to help out whenever possible.
