El Labrador del Sol

2020 was a busy year for us. We set up the School of Muralism, which left us with less time for painting than in previous years. So of course we were itching to get something done. Right at the end of the year, the chance presented itself in Valencia. This project became the fourth mural in an area called ‘La Huerta’, on the outskirts of the beautiful mediterranean city.

'My grandma told me a few years back that if an artist walks through, I should offer them the wall’ a young man tending to his vegetable patch told us. And he did. The wall is next to a tall riverbank built on either side, so the viewer sees it from the same height as the roof, which is peculiar. We wanted to paint something local, with a strong sense of perspective, that would be easily recognisable and fun to paint. In the end, we took inspiration from a beautiful nearby field of cabbages.

The photo

To create the image, we set up at dawn to capture the light and the unexpected happened - our own shadow was also thrown into the perspective, putting the viewer in the picture. We painted it in three days and it was indeed great fun. We even had a local TV crew come and visit, which was a real treat.
