The Hive

We were commissioned by the school to transform the Music Block with a large scale participatory mural.

After a lot of preparation and risk assessments, we found a way to work during lockdown. Our brief was to involve the children of key workers in the creative process and later invite them to come out and paint.

In the end, even the parents showed, plus few regular volunteers. In total 18 volunteers helped us paint the entire building in just seven days! The idea was to have a 3D design on the front of the building, breaking up the flatness of the wall with intriguing spheres that formed a futuristic hive.

On the reverse side, the design breaks downs into freestyle hexagons improvisation.

Throughout the process, we were inspired by the children’s desire to overcome difficulties and elevate their game, even under such difficult circumstances.

Photographer extraordinaire Helen Murray even paid us a visit, to document the process.
